Senior Google Wallet execs leave for payments start-up

Two senior executives from Google Wallet have left to set up a mobile payments venture of their own. Jonathan Wall, a founding engineer with Google Wallet, and Marc Freed-Finnegan, its product lead, are working on a start-up called Tappmo, says Techcrunch.  The same report says Google Wallet has seen “a wave of departures over the last month or so”. The company is looking to spread its service to more mobile operators, debit/credit cards and handsets in the US (it has yet to launch outside the States). However it has the support of only Sprint among US operators and a presence on the Citi MasterCard card (in addition to Google’s own pre-paid card). It is currently only available on two Samsung NFC handsets with the LG Viper set to follow shortly.

The duo have not disclosed the nature of the new venture although it will enable offline mobile payments. According to Tappmo’s new website it is a) a consumer experience b) a next generation commerce network and c) fuel for the mobile shopping revolution.
